My 2x great grandfather’s brother, George Vassar lived at 29 Scammel Street in 1857. He was a builder and his ‘office’ was located at 200 Madison Avenue. (Vassar Brothers Construction) I imagine 29 Scammel would have been a tenement at that time. He came to the USA, from England, in 1846 and, married in 1853. Any other info available for this address? Thanks and love your site!

My grandmother was born at 51 Scammel Street on August 15, 1897. Seeing this picture of Scammel Street brought me closer to her. Thank you ! Doug McCrory ( back then it would have been Doug McCrorey)

My great grandfather, John Hanley (born USA 1865) son of Irish immigrants, grew up at 43 Scammell St. He later would move to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and become warden of the Tombs Prison.

George Vogt:
I think you and I are related. My father was John Hanley who I believe was the Grandson of the John Hanley who was the warden at the Tombs. I knew nothing about my paternal family history unfortunately until my father died and I found documents that my father had kept.
