My grandfather was raised at Mt Loretto around 1880’s early 1890’s His name was Thomas Francis Harding born in 12/31/1880. Do you have any old records that I can obtain info from.
Thanks and have a super day…

I have asked several times for this information – I am looking for information on Sister Margaret Mary (Grace Kelly) and sister Theresa Carmel (Anne Kelly) who were both principals of each boys and girls school at the same time in the late 40’s early 50’s. Anything you can send me would be appreciated. They are cousins. Parents were Tom and Matilda Kelly.
Thanks
Maureen

my grandmother was there from 1923/1924 into the 30’s when she aged out. Her name was Catherine and her last name was Mac or Mack. Her brother, who I believe was named James, was there at the same time.
We were told that they were placed in there after their father died and their mother was unable to care for them as she had many other children, we believe she gave up the youngest two children (Catherine and James).
Does this sound familiar? Do you think this may be the Catherine that you were referring to?

My Mother resided there from the age of two thru seventeen ( 1932 – 1947 ) although she was thankful to be fortunate to have a place to live . I found out later my Mom was sexually molested by a nun or nuns and older girls. My Aunt told me when I was older, when I asked my Mom she just cried at first. My Momhad told me of a lot of good at ML…but I was sickened when I found this out. I’m catholic, I believe there are far more dedicated and wonderful clergy then not. I’m not an anti- priest person by no means. There are sick people whereever you go. But I wonder if anyone else has a like story.

Robin November 15, 2019 - 1:23 pm

IT Doesn’t matter one way or the other, If those of us are not believed, When we recall being Molested ! Many of us, God has protected, from even recalling such Abuse. I had to step forward to share my story of woe. As a Pastor, as well as a True Servant to The true, King of Kings, I know that the Catholic Church , came out 300 Hundred years after Our Lord shed his blood , and used as a living Sacrifice, so all who believe, will enter The Kingdom of Heaven. The Pope, is The False Profit ! He recently said at a Sunday mass , That Jesus failed the cross ! Well it was clear that anyone who has a Relationship with Jesus, Understands that The Pope knows nothing about the God’s plan. I Pray that some of you will read a NIV Bible will find out the whole Truth. Read Matthew Chapters 24 & 25. Many Church’s refuse to Educate the people, on Living in The last Days. May God Bless You , Keep his Eyes on You, & send Angels to protect us all, In The Name Of Jesus . Guard Your Heart’s, Tame your Tongue , and keep Both Eyes Looking Up, For No One knows The Day, The Time or The Hour, of Our Lord’s return, Only God Knows .

Theresa October 28, 2021 - 7:13 am

My mother Eleanor Theresa Scarfo was there from 1927 to 1938 when she aged out. She spoke to me about abuse by the nuns. They were beaten and punished for something as simple as taking extra cookies. She did not speak of sexual abuse but knowing my mother as being such a private woman, she probably never would have talked about it. She is gone now but she was a wonderful caring mother despite having gone through such a horrible childhood.

I was living at Saint Elizabeth’s girls orphanage, mount loretto, Statten island, New York. I was there from 1966-1970 I have a silly question. I was in the junior and the intermediate doors, the girl used to say “NA-BUT” As if to use it as “I am just kidding” What I want to know was it a Spanish work or some word they made up. I would love to know, if any of you girls remember. Email me at Barbara2123@hotmail.com Thank you.

I was four years old when I first went to MIV. I was terrified of the nuns because the nuns would hit or punish us for any infraction at all. It was a place of constant terror for me. They provided the basics, like: grizzled meat, raw potatoes, and plenty of hunger all around. I was very anemic. There was no affection, but plenty of chastisements. All personalities were suppressed, and whipped into shape. In addition, there was no mental stimulation as we had to lay on the floor for hours with nothing to do but fall asleep, or we would be outside on a nice day, but had to stay in one spot for hours at a time with nothing to do. My spot was beneath a tree that felt my sorrow, frustration, and pain.

I share the same memories and was also there at the age of four, from 1956 – 1959. It was awful! A child should never be exposed to such isolation and pain. I had my older sister (7 yrs old) which I’m sure made it more tolerable. It took us many years to heal and to be able to talk about our experience without breaking down – sobbing and crying. Hope you are doing well. Stay strong.

Hi Kevin ~ I was at Mt. Loretto from 1951-1962. I read that St. Elizabeth’s where girls lived had a fire destroying the entire building. There are pictures posted on the internet showing what’s left, which is nothing. I took a ride on the bus to Tottenville about ten years ago, and past Mt. Loretto, and what was the girls side, St. Elizabeth’s, is nothing but grown weeds, trees etc. You mentioned you took a walk on the girl’s side recently (your post dated March 28, 2019) and chatted with an individual walking his dog who worked there. I’m curious where it was you were walking since there’s a fence there now and no access to the girl’s side. You didn’t mention what years you were at Mt. Loretto.

Hi Francis. Sorry I haven’t responded to your msg. Obviously I’m not on this site often. It’s odd it’s been a year to date. If you were to go there now you would be able to park on Hylan Blvd. and take the long walk to where St Elizabeth was, you remember the building where the younger girls resided or it might be the house where the monsignor lived is still there. I would visit my younger sister on Wednesday “visiting day”.
What prompted me to come back to this site was a news article mentioning a Supreme Court action against the Mount about atrocities there. It was karma that I met the gentleman walking his dog that worked there during my stay and opened old wounds of memories of rubber hose beatings, etc. but it ended on a good note when we went to a great German restaurant nearby. Well Francis I’m getting much too lengthy and have to dry an eye. Stay well Kevin.

Ms. Wood:

I was at Mount Loretto during the period of 1948=1952.

I don’t recall a nun with the name that you give, and the reason(s) for that could be: (a)- she was assigned to “the cottages” on the Boys Side (where the younger children were housed) or, (2)- she could have been assigned to St. Elizabeth’s (on the Girls Side). With that said, all I can offer up is the information that there is a cemetery section attached to the grounds that “the Mount” once occupied and she might very well be buried there.

On a somewhat more positive note, I believe that all of the nuns who were at Mount Loretto during the time that your aunt was there were all members of the order of Saint Francis. I believe that the Mother House has (in more recent times) been moved to Syracuse, N.Y. I suspect if you write to them, they might be able to provide you with more definitive information that has been provided here.

I know your post is from years ago, but if Orphan Train records exist, they would be in the archives of the Children’s Aid Society which may now be at the New-York Historical Society. Their libary staff is exceptionally helpful. Maybe theycould give you some leads. When you contact them reference Orphan Trains & and Children’s Aid Society in your subject line. Good luck to you.

John July 4, 2018 - 8:17 pm

I could well be wrong on this, but did not the so-called “Orphan Trains” originate in such places as New York City (and other Northeast coastal cities) and TAKE children from this area and, well, “give them away” at train stops all throughout the Midwest (and West)?

While I suppose your mother could have traveled to New York from, say, a place like Boston, I’m not sure that the so-called “Orphan Trains” were a part of her past (which is not to suggest that “The Children’s Aid Society” was not).

I believe that if call or write to Mount Loretto and give them whatever information you might have, they might e able to help you.

I was at the mount from 1959 to 1964 Angel Mendez and I was transferred from St. Dominic in Blauvelt. We lived in the same dormitory, the same room of five. We were very good friends. I still have photographs of him and l. We went to the movies, dated two sisters. Both of us were very good cartoon artist, sang doo wop with two other guys. I was stationed in Germany and received a long distant phone call from Fr Mangan that Angel died. When I heard how he died. I told myself yeah that’s Angel. I felt so good that l knew him.

I must admit to having had a good education including my high schoo years at Tottenville high. I was hoping that I may ask for photos during those years of the cottages 1 – 6 and the high school cottage. I was in the choir and the marching band. Would you also have photos of those? My grandfather, Benny Westcott, and all of his siblings were sent to Mount Loretto from about 1914-1922 after their mother died during childbirth. He had several cousins there at the same time also. He said it was a tough place for a kid to grow up, but appreciated all that the Priests and Nuns did for him and his siblings, especially with the limited financial resources they had. He said one of the Priests taught him how to box, and he began sneaking out at night to enter club-fights when he was about 12. The money he would win from boxing he would use to buy his siblings decent shoes and clothes.

I don’t know what to believe about Mount Loretto. I see a lot of contrasting letters about Mount Loretto. It is nice that orphanages are part of the past in the United States. Although foster homes are far from perfect, it is far better than institution care. There was no oversight of Mount Loretto by the State Of New York’s government. Religious institution were exempt from state regulations that secular institutions had to abide by. With the big scandal of sex abuse by priests in the Roman Catholic church, it was probably far worse in orphanages that children with parents. It is good that these institutions have closed and have been replaced with individual foster homes.

Na-but was commonly used by us at The Mount. It isn’t a Spanish word/term. I believe it’s a derivative from `Now… but’ which translates into ‘Hold on, I’m only kidding’. It still shocks me when I read about the horrifying stories. I was there from. 1962-1966 & I always refer to it as ‘bittersweet’. I Praise God that I didn’t experience abuse and I am grateful for the blessings. It taught me strength and much more. It has lead me to a better life than I would’ve had otherwise. Love & blessings. Yikes, memories! I lived at the mount, St. Elizabeth’s building, from 1965-1974. I remember being afraid and trying to hide a lot. Despite the actual beauty of the place and location it felt so ugly and scary to me. I felt compelled for some unknown reason to visit the mission in 2000, and resisted the persistent internal nudging but finally reluctantly went. The St. Elizabeth building was half standing from a fire that week. I did not read it or hear about it but when I was standing there looking at the charred building and the beautiful grounds and other two older girls buildings, unkempt from years of no use, I realized it was God that guided me there to validate that this is what my insides felt those years living there. On a lighter side, read others mentioning the Na-But thing, OMG that was so part of my daily speak! lol! Had not thought of that in a long time.

Hopefully, those of us who suffered sexual abuse during our time at the Mount will file a claim in NY under the Child Victim’s Act before August 13, 2021. Trust me, you will not be the only one. However, do not wait until August when time is short and therefore more stressful. It will not cost you anything for a lawyer taking CVA cases, such as law offices of Jeff Anderson. There is no age limit to file a claim. I heard yesterday of one person filing a claim for abuse from 70 years ago.

Hopefully, for those of us who were sexually abused as a child at the Mount and scarred for life, you can file a claim under the NY CVA (Child Victim’s Act) by the August 13, 2021 no matter how long ago your trauma occurred. Try googling NY CVA lawyers but don’t wait until the last minute.) You should not have to pay anything unless you get a settlement. I heard about a claim which was filed for a person who was sexually abused as a child 70 years ago. Remember, time is running out for you to make a claim. You can request to remain anonymous in your claim.

Does anyone know the name of the old nurse (NUN) that wore a white nun’s habit and worked in the Girl’s Infirmary in the 50’2 – 60’s at the St. Elizabeth building on the girl side? If so, please tell me. Thanks.

Hoping to connect with anyone who recalls Fr John Frawley from their time at the Mount. He was a priest there (primarily on the girls side?) from the mid 40’s to mid 50’s. If you remember him, I’d love to hear your recollections! Please email me at
bruinblue82@gmail.com. Thanks!

My very close friend – the late George RYMER, Queens NY – a retired NYPD Sgt. and his siblings were place there by their Mom – who suffered from alcoholism – in the 1940s. George too developed the same disease but recovered in the early 1970s. His life was filled with a God
conscious commitment to recovery as he dedicated the remainder of his life to helping many in his devoted 12 Step way of life. I will never forget George RYMER. Sadly he was taken from this life on earth & from his beloved Vera when in 1994 George went home to be with his beloved Jesus. I miss you George. Love, Jim Devine ( retired Lt, NYPD)

My grandfather was at Mount Loretto. James Tessitore and his two brothers Joseph and Andrew Tessitore. James (Jim) was born 7/3/1903. He did not go in “the home” as he called it, as an infant but as a boy. He probably left the orphanage circa 1919 at the age of
16 as I am told at that age you were sent out to make your way in the world. Are there any records from that time?

Hi, my grandfather Timothy Morgan Cole and all of his siblings were sent to Mount Loretto I believe in the late 40’s. My great grandmother had 17 kids and from what I am told they all went to Mt. Loretto. Some of my aunts and uncles names are Robert, Diane, Sedalla, Emilio, Viola and Rufino just to name a few. If anyone has any information please let me know.

I would love to find the records of my mother who was at Mount Loretto Orphanage on Staten Island when her father became ill after her mother and grandmother died. This would have been around 1932/1934.
Her name was Mary A. Griffin and her address at the time 330 Maujer Street, Brooklyn, N.Y.
