TUNNEL SURVIVORS

by Kevin Walsh

1936-vintage lamppost at Tunnel Entrance Street at the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Murray Hill.  Somehow, the original fixtures, futuristic-looking in the 1930s, have survived. They seem to be precursors of the cobra neck lamps that appeared in the early 1960s.

Do the vintage QMT lamposts have modern sodium vapor lamps installed?

Those are classic 1940s Westinghouse cuplights — I haven’t been there at night so I can’t say. They can take sodium bulbs, I think.

I always liked the streamlined deco look of the 30s. It’s such a clean and futuristic look that definitely needs to make a comeback.
P.S. I like the new look of your website, it’s just going to take me a while to get used to it.

I USED TO SEE THESE STUPID GREEN LIGHT POLES ON PEDESTRIAN OVERPASSES ON THE BQE, GOWANUS OR ON THE 278.
