Trinity Church Cemetery in the corner near 153rd, methinks. Probably the only Jewish marker in the place!

Trinity Cemetery in Upper Manhattan occupys a square plot of land bounded by 153rd Street to 155th Street on Amsterdam Avenue to 153rd Street & Riverside Drive divided half way to Riverside Drive by Broadway. Former Mayor Koch pre-erected his headstone at close to 153rd Street and Amsterdam. In addition, although Trinity Cemetery may be Episcopal, there are many Jewish-sounding names, and those of other faiths and nationalities interned in the cemetery.

Trinity Cemetery way uptown. Tried visiting this myself this past summer but every gate on this side of the cemetery seemed to have been locked

The cemetery is rather capricious about when it opens. I was there the day after Christmas, and it was locked, so I came back a couple of weeks later.

Some cemetery plots are reserved long before that person dies, and Barbra Streisand has a mausoleum for her at the Mt Hebron Cemetery over in Queens even though she hasn’t died yet.

apparently my grandparents, back in the 1960s bought cemetery plots for the family. Kind of a creepy gift, but a very generous one, really. And phew, glad to hear that Koch didnt die!

You are clearly the Ghost of Chanukah Yet To Come, and are showing Ed Koch the shadows of things that may be, lest he repent and change his evil ways.

Trinity Church Cemetery at Broadway and 155th Street. Koch bought the plot several years ago. According to a NY Times article: “Carved on the tombstone is the most important prayer in Judaism, “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One,” in English, Hebrew and a transliteration, and the last words of the journalist Daniel Pearl before he was murdered by Islamic terrorists: “My father is Jewish; my mother is Jewish; I am Jewish.”

I found this on your website regarding the Shearith Israel cemetery:

http://classic.forgotten-ny.com/CEMETERIES/Hidden%20cemeteries/hidcem.html

“In 1852 city law forbade burial within Manhattan, and subsequent interments have been made in Queens.”

Was Trinity an exception, or is the law no longer on the books?

I’ll have to clarify it — let me research

I think that law mentioned no new cemeteries could be placed in major cities like NYC in what defined it at the time, but I don’t think it stated that they could no longer be used.

I’ve spent time with Koch when he ran for NY Congress (Garment District), He came to my studio and we worked on creating photographic images for his campaign… Nice guy at the time, still a nice guy but for the lasts number of years he should have become a (moderate Republican) if that exists in the party. Bury him on the lawn of NY City Hall being as as Mayor seemed to be the only time the man was happy.

I’m really surprised he didn’t order his trademark “How’m I Doing?” inscribed as well.

It could have been followed by, “Yes, I’m dead…but I’d still like to know!”

Or followed by…”If I’m here, it can’t be good.”

Ed Koch is still alive and well. As a youngster he was a rifleman with the Unitted States Army and saw a lot of combat in Hurtgen Forest in Germany. As an old duffer I forget his outfit and he won’t mention a word about it but he was there. I never loved him as a mayor but you always knew where he stood.

Joel:

Ah yes…the “Bess Mess”, as it came to be known. It had some very…shall I say bizarre elements, involving a nearly blind elderly judge, Hortense Gabel, & her strange daughter, Sukhreet, who (& I’m NOT making this up), made a failed attempt at incorporating the scandal this into a cabaret act, of all things. What a sad spectacle it was.

Bess, however, was exonerated & literally walked home free.

The late 80s in NYC…The Bess Mess, Joel Steinberg, Robert Chambers…Howard Beach, Bensonhurst, Wappinger Falls, crack vials underfoot that crunched like snow…what a great time it was(n’t)!

When Koch leaves us, can we please restore Queensboro Bridge to its rightful name?

Interesting that Trinity cemetery allows gravestones with names of people not in the grave. Evergreen in Queens stopped the practice because many people pre cut the stone and then went to Florida to never return to NYC. I dis covered this when I was seeking out ancestors graves.
