NOTHING LEFT

by Kevin Walsh

This awning sign on 86th Street near 5th Avenue is actually now one of the more venerable signs on the street, dating to 1981 or so. There was originally a plastic figure of a girl trying vainly to fit into her pants. It has gradually chipped off bit by bit over the years, so that only her legs remain.

Refreshing to see an establishment actually using truth in advertising. More should follow suit – especially in Brighton Beach, for example – depicting its – ahem – “full figured” citizens desperately trying to stuff their rich abundance of cellulite into the tightest of leggings, made even worse from post-Sandy bloat. Yum!

That store is next to the Century 21 department store where I worked part time as a stockboy from 1969 to 1972. I remember getting a 10 cent raise bringing by wage up to $1.70 an hour. I worked with a great bunch of people during that time.

I was about 11 years of age when that sign went up, and recall when it was new.
