VINTAGE NO PARKING, Sheepshead Bay

by Kevin Walsh

On a telephone pole, hidden behind another pole, on the corner of Sheepshead Bay Road and Voorhies Avenue. Probably first attached there in the 1950s or 1960s — still has the old ‘Department of Traffic’ ID.

Walker Evans collected signs like that
Wouldn’t be surprised if that one soon disappears for the same reason

That sign must be in a shadow and/or facing north. Many newer “No Parking” signs in the general vicinity have been bleached by the sun, and are totally unreadable, resulting in big fines for the unwary.

They use a lot of red in the modern signs which fades a lot quicker than black in the Sun.

I’m figuring that sign has already been stolen.
