FALLSTON FIRE CLAY, Maspeth

by Kevin Walsh

Often, paving bricks offer a window into the past. I was on 64th Street in the Ridgewood Gardens area in northern Maspeth a couple of years ago when I spotted some bricks on a sidewalk marked Fallston Fire Clay Co., Fallston, PA.

Fallston, PA. is a very small community in Beaver County on the Beaver River near the Ohio border; the more well-known Beaver Falls is nearby. Fallston’s brick and clay works were in business from the 1890s through 1922. Subsequently, the brick works became theĀ Littell Steel Company in 1946.

My grandfather owned this brick yard until his death in 1945. Have you ever found any with Pettler stamped on them?
