SACKETT, Gowanus

by Kevin Walsh

Sackett Street, which is usually found in the pleasant stretches of Cobble Hill and the increasingly tonified Park Slope, also has this dead end stretch off Bond, the at ends at the noxious and noisome Gowanus Canal. It hasn’t been paved for a number of years and its Belgian blocks have once again emerged. A curved-mast lamppost without its support bracket, dating to the 1950s, futilely lights this forlorn stretch.

Down the street to the right was Bayside Fuel Oil terminal. It closed sometime in the 90s. Opposite Bayside was a coal storage yard(I forget the name),closed in the 70s? The storage bins have long since been torn down and now serves as a parking lot for oil tanker trucks.
