WHERE AM I?

by Kevin Walsh

Two streets in NYC begin with X (if you don’t count Brooklyn’s Avenue X).

Without googling or looking at an atlas… where are they?

Xenia is in Corona. I only know this because my elementary school was near that intersection.

On Staten Island right off Hylan Blvd in the Dongan Hills area. My brother used to live on that block…

In Corona by Horace Harding Expressway. My aunt lives in LeFrak City and I still visit her to this day, she’s been there around 40 years. I believe there’s an express bus stop by this street as well, just not sure what bus.

OK, after seeing the way the answers were split between Queens and Staten Island, I cheated, and Googled Xenia St. There is one in Queens and one in Staten Island. Are BOTH the X streets mentioned in the question called Xenia Street? The sign pictured seems to be the one in Queens, at the intersection of Otis Street, since neither cross street that the one-block Xenia Street in Staten Island intersects fits the visible portion of the other street sign.

It seems to be located off the LIE, at Otis Avenue.

Yeah, Avenue. It says “AV” clearly, how could I have said “Street”? BTW, I’ve wondered for a long time why the official abbreviation on city signs is “Av”, but most other places it is “Ave”.
