COCA METRO

by Kevin Walsh

This faded Coca-Cola ad has held forth on the south side of Metropolitan Avenue near 73rd Street in Middle Village for just either side of a century by now. The beverage company, established in 1887, has rendered its name in “Spencerian Script” since the very beginning, with some tweaks here and there, and variants in other aspects of the logo… but the written name has remained basically the same.

Speaking of classic Coca Cola wall ads, the best I’ve seen is in DC, on the side of a rowhouse on South Capitol Street. Anyone taking a train (Amtrak or commuter) south from Union Station can see it well if he sits on the right side. It’s the very first thing you see when the train emerges from the tunnel that goes from Union Station underneath the Capitol. Either it’s been preserved better than any other outdoor paint job in the world or, more likely, it’s been touched up over the years. Whichever, it’s a great piece of work.

There’s one in Roanoke, Virginia, that I think has been restored. I have a photo of it on my website at http://www.stevedunham.50megs.com/photos/Coke_sign.html
