HUNTER BALTIMORE RYE, 2000, Lincoln Center

by Kevin Walsh

Probably the biggest “painted ad” uncovered since I began FNY was at Broadway and West 64th Street, revealed during the demolition of the Liberty Warehouse in 2000. It’s an ad for Hunter Batlimore Rye, a brand founded by William Lanahan in Maryland. The brand continued to be produced into the 1940s.

The Liberty Warehouse wasn’t semifamous for this ad, though. Throughout its existence, it had a 37-foot tall replica of the Statue of Liberty on the roof.

Isn’t the Liberty Warehouse building (the one that had the statue, that is) still standing? I thought it was converted to condos.

Click on the hotlink at the end of the article and you can read what happened to the building, and to Little Liberty.

I clicked on the link for “The Hunter Baltimore Rye story” and was very surprised to see that the product in question was liquor. I was expecting a brand of rye bread. I guess New York rye is something to eat, but Baltimore rye is something to drink.

I assumed the same thing until I came back later and read your comment!

Love me some rye whiskey, would have love to have tried the Hunter!
