MILKFLOWER SIGN, Astoria

by Kevin Walsh

Upscale pizza joint Milkflower opened on 34-12 31st Avenue in Astoria in 2013. I haven’t been in yet (my favorite pizza in Astoria remains Sac’s on Broadway) but I was attracted to this vintage, or faux vintage, neon sign hung over the sidewalk. If I had to guess, I’d imagine it’s red and green, perhaps some white. Yellow and white.

Perhaps it’s an old sign the proprietors appropriated, or perhaps it’s a new sign made to look vintage. Anyone have any idea?

Not sure myself, but “wood fired” is often used in new pizzerias—-artsy-craftsy. I don’t recall ever seeing older pizzerias using the term.

It’s a new sign, and it glows yellow-white. It’s pretty neat when it’s turned on. The pizza is good too, and the pie prices are comparable to Sac’s.

I would guess there was no such thing as “wood-fired” pizza before our times.

Kevin, I know you know this place. When in Coney Island, Neptune Ave., Totonno Pizzeria Napolitana. I thought I knew all the good pizza joints, but a girlfriend took me to this place back in ’74 and at that time they had a small brick oven in the back, nothing fancy, storefront straight out of the 20’s maybe older, looked like the place was closed. We sat down and I enjoyed some of the best pizza I’ve tasted in my life. I’m not sure if they were burning wood or coal at that time, but these guys had it going on then.

I wonder if Nick’s is still over on B’way & 33rd St.? It was a Greek place- Now I’m Eye-talian and like a good pizza, and while Nick’s wasn’t the best by any means, I used to have it once in a while as it was quite different- very greasy [Did I mention “Greek”? :D] quite unique. If you’re ever in the mood for something a li’l different…if the place is still there……
