CLAPBOARD HOUSE, Stapleton

by Kevin Walsh

Well, as the great Bob Grant used to say, that slams the lid on things for 2014. Closing out the year with a green clapboard house at Clinton and Brewster (yeah, I didn’t know where this was either until today) with white windows and red shutters — I bet that chimney works too. Nothing fancy here, folks, no porches or dormers. This place has stood firm for decades, if not over a century. Like me, hopefully.

NYC Dept of City Planning website shows this house being constructed prior to 1899, so you’re correct Kevin, it’s been around over a century. Lots of nice, simple homes like this all over Staten Island, you just gotta know where to look.

Bob Grant, NYC talk radio pioneer, passed away on 12/31/13. He remained at the microphone through July, 2013. His retirement was brief after a long career. He was like “The Ancient Mariner”: providing his own opinions & the opportunity for audience members to provide theirs. Another of his tag lines was: “It’s sick out there & getting sicker”. Sad but true. On the first anniversary of his passing all that can be said is: Rest in peace.,
