BLANK NECKWEAR, Midtown

by Kevin Walsh

“J.S. Blank & Co., Men’s Neckwear” is the only one of a handful of painted business signs still visible on East 30th Street east of 5th Avenue. The sign is actually painted on the rear of #112 Madison Avenue. Joseph Blank founded the company in 1923 and moved to this building in 1928. Appropriately enough, since this ad is the only one remaining visible on the wall, J.S. Blank is still in business and has its HQ a bit uptown on West 36th Street.

It’s a shame the ad just to its left for Edgar S. Bibas Cravats is now faded to illegibility. When is the last time you heard someone use the word cravat?
