Forgotten New York

FINNAN HADDIE

Even though the South Street Seaport area ceased to be home to NYC’s foremost fish wholesaler when the Fish Market moved to Hunt’s Point, Bronx, in 2005, there are still ghost signs around to remind you that the overnights were once bustling with seafood dealers and sellers, like this sign on Beekman Street near South. “Finnan haddie” is smoked haddock, originally produced near Findon, Scotland.

“Finnan haddie” pops up in the Cole Porter classic “My Heart Belongs to Daddy,” popularized by Mary Martin, Eartha Kitt and Marilyn Monroe, among many others.
