Forgotten New York

CROTONA TELEVISION, Belmont

Forgotten Fan Rolando Pujol provided this shot of a small shack on East 180th Street just east of Crotona Avenue and the ancient neon Crotona TV sign. The neon has long disappeared but the bright blue and white colors are still vivid, as the sign was likely hidden from view for a few decades.

Andrea Electronics is still in business. In the Fab 50s, they were a prestige brand referred to as the “Cadillac of Televisions.” By the 1960s the company was developing the intercom system used onboard the spaceships of NASA’s Mercury program, in which man orbited the earth in outer space for the first time; and by the 1990s, Andrea was pioneering noise cancellation tech used in personal headphones.

RIP: Building burned in March 2020.
