WHILE edging down Hudson Street In October 2021 I once again passed Golden Rule Liquors at #457 with its pair of neon sidewalk signs, one above the door, one suspended over the sidewalk. From the very beginnings of Forgotten New York in the dial-up modem era I have noted NYC’s grand old neon liquor store signs; there seem to be more classic neon signs on liquor stores than any other business. They get the job done…why change them? However, the neon must be f=difficult to replace when the tubes burn out.
Golden Rule Liquors (drink unto others as they would drink unto you) has been in this location since 1937…
And I thought I would test the veracity of that claim with a peek into the 1940 Municipal Archives, and you can indeed just about make out “Golden Rule” in gold leaf on the window. Alas, no neon sidewalk sign yet, though there’s some nifty etched glass signage LIQUORS WINES CORDIALS.
That shingle neon sign could very well be the one in the 1940 photo, though!
