Forgotten New York

LIRR PLATFORM LAMPS, Bayside

ONE of these months, I’m going to get my act together and assemble enough photographs of subway and railroad platform lamps to do an omnibus page on them. I have resisted forever because in the back of my head I had been a little prejudiced against them because they didn’t illuminate streets…just railroad platforms. But there is a wide variety now, from leftover classic styles to ultra-streamlined stuff from the 1970s and 1980s.

This variety, seen here at the Bayside station, threads the needle and makes a tentative return to some of the styling that has been missing since the 1960s. These posts were introduced in the early 2000s during station renovations on the Port Washington Branch (they may be used on other branches, too) and can also be found at the Auburndale and Broadway stations. They come in two different heights and also have a Twin version. Thus far, they all shine using yellow sodium instead of cold white LED (which is why I have an affinity for them.)

As always, “comment…as you see fit.” I earn a small payment when you click on any ad on the site.
