Winston cigarettes were introduced by R.J. Reynolds in 1954 and at times, the brand has been the best-selling cigarette in the USA.
Before 1971, when cigarette ads were banned on radio and TV, it was a staple of network advertising with its slogan, “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.” One of its last TV ad campaigns dealt with the problematic syntax, and used the old slogan, plus a new one: “What do you want, good grammar or good taste?”
This faded metal Winston sign can be found at an abandoned deli at Bedford and Division Avenues in the Willieburg.
