Like most older cities, Philadelphia has done a good job rooting out and eradicating older cast-iron or wrought-iron lampposts, but here’s one it hasn’t found, perhaps the last dinosaur of its kind, at North 5th Street and West Montgomery Avenue in North Philly; another major route, Germantown Avenue, also crosses here. Today it’s used asa utility pole to hang one-way and street signs, its old incandescent fixture long gone.
Thanks to Brian Torres at Facebook’s American Street Light Enthusiasts And Collectors for locating it. Perhaps Spring City, the Pennsylvania lighting company, can create new molds for these–it’s a great mastarm design.
Am I dooming it?
