PRIOR to my visit to the NY Sign Museum, I found a good one at the beginning of a walk that took me into Borough Park, Windsor Terrace and Park Slope. After getting off the D train at Fort Hamilton Parkway I sought some items under the el on New Utrecht Avenue and was rewarded immediately with this brilliant yellow, red and green sign for a combination Chinese takeout and delicatessen.
You will often find the word “dragon” in the title of Chinese restaurants as the dragon is the unofficial mascot animal of China (like the eagle, USA; bulldog, England; bear, Russia). Chinese restaurant signage is often in yellow and red with green less often used. This sign, plastic on vinyl, uses three fonts: Cooper Black, Helvetica Bold, Century Schoolbook Bold. Note the old dial phone logo, as dial phones were likely still in wide use when the sign was produced.
I wonder what the two Chinese characters on the left say. My bet is “golden dragon,” but let me know in Comments.
Golden Dragon is unusual in that it also retains a sidewalk shingle sign, produced in the same colors as the main sign. The font appears to be Clarendon Condensed or an imitative font.
There were some other interesting signs in the area; I’ll get to those soon.
