I WAS STATIONED AT THE BKLYN NAVY YARD IN 1971 AS A YOUNG RADIOMAN ATTACHED TO ATLANTIC FLEET COMM [ATFLTCOM] DESIGNATION. AT TIMES WE WERE SENT TO THE COMMANDANT HOUSE TO PERFORM CERTAIN TASKS SUCH AS POLICING THE AREA, CLEANUP DETAILS ETC. BEING NEW IN THE NAVY WAS A CHALLENGE AT TIMES WE HAD THE JOBS THAT SENIOR PETTY OFFICERS REFRAINED FROM. THE COMMANDANTS HOUSE ALSO HAD A SECRET COMPARTMENT IN ONE OF THE ROOMS IN THE MANSION WE HAD HEARD IT WAS A SAFE FOR CERTAIN RECORD AND DOCUMENTS OF MILITARY STATUS. THE OFFICERS IN CHARGE OF ANY DETAIL AT THE MANSION CLOSELY WATCHED EVERYTHING DONE. BY ENLISTED PERSONNEL. THERE WAS A SENSE OF MYSTERY AT TIMES THERE WHICH IS COMMON IN ANY MILITARY UNIT. THE SAFE WAS SAID TO BE WHERE ONLY CERTAIN OFFICERS KNEW ABOUT AND THOSE WITH TOP SECRET SECURITY CLEARANCES. I WAS VERY CURIOUS BUT KEPT MY MIND ON MY WORK ASSIGNED TO NOT TO ALERT ANY ATTENTION TO ME BECAUSE THE OFFICERS WERE QUICK TO DISCIPLINE YOU FOR ANYTHING SUCH AS “WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?’ KEEP YOUR MIND ON YOUR WORK ETC SOME OF THE OFFICERS WERE IDIOTS AND MORONS THE WAY THEY ACTED AT TIMES SNEAKING DRINKS FROM THE ADMIRALS BAR AREA . A CHIEF PETTY OFFICER TOLD US DO YOUR JOB AND NOTHING ELSE AND ALL WILL BE OK. YOU CAN GET IN SERIOUS TROUBLE IN THAT HOUSE!! I I WAS HAPPY WHEN I TRANSFERRED TO NAVAL BASE RHODE ISLAND.
