I lived in Canarsie as a child, from the 1960’s. My grandmother bought a house on Rockaway Parkway near Avenue-L in 1946,when my mom was only 18.She was married from that house in 1952 and I was born in 1962.I went to Canarsie High School and recall “Grabstein’s Deli” on Rockaway Parkway,”Kenny’s Variety Store” and “Philly’s Fish Store” on Avenue-L in the 1970’s and the “Meats and Treats” deli. The neighborhood has changed drastically since my childhood;racially, ethnically and culturally. When I was young,Canarsie was mostly Italian and Jewish.I moved away from there in 1990 to Spring Hill,Florida. On a recent trip back,I recognized practically nothing. The area is now almost exclusively West-Indian and in nearly 30 years that has past has bow become a thriving Caribbean community.
