I lived in 395 Oliver Place, Apt. 42, from 1948 to 1959. I am delighted to see the red brick street is still intact – at least in front of my old house! I was sad to learn that the Edison Studio was taken down. When I was a kid, Angelo was the caretaker of the building, and a friend of my father’s. On the hottest summer days, Angelo would let my sister and me into the dark Studio, with its 2-story ceiling height, to cool off. The building was constructed of 6″ thick concrete to make it soundproof. There were also no windows to disrupt the lighting requirements of the productions that were shot there. Those conditions guaranteed a refuge from the heat that, back then, felt like AIR CONDITIONING!

Many times, everyone in the neighborhood would be out in the street watching the exterior shots of a detective show, “Man Against Crime” starring Ralph Bellamy, that was produced at the Studio. It ran from 1949 to 1955. We all watched as Ralph Bellamy was being filmed climbing our fire escapes, jumping from roof to roof, cornering gangsters in the alley and having shoot-outs with the Bad Guys on the street!

During my early days on Oliver Place, Webster Avenue was paved with cobblestones. Produce wagons pulled by horses could be heard blocks away, their hooves clopping on the stones. As they came closer, my sister and I would run to the window to see the horses trot by! I have many fond memories of the neighborhood! This website has rekindled them and the romance I had with my Oliver Place!
