BUSH TERMINAL LAMP

by Kevin Walsh

A group of white-painted monoliths between 2nd and 3rd Avenues between 29th and 36th Streets west of Green-Wood Cemetery were constructed by architect William Higginson in the first 3 decades of the 20th Century for industrialist Irving T. Bush. There are 15 lofts in total, each 6 to 8 stories in height, fully 200 acres of land given to vast warehouses and manufacturing lofts.  Bush Terminal had a waterfront railroad and 18 deep water piers.

Today Bush Terminal is becoming a beehive of activity  in the telecommunications field, as many of its buildings are being converted by Industry City Associates into broadband services providers, paving the way for digital broadcasts over the internet and high-speed internet.

South of there, though, there’s an active railroad connection alongside and down the middle of 1st Avenue, also along former Bush Terminal property where a new public park, Bush Terminal Piers Park, opened a few years ago. In December 2018 I wandered around in there for a bit (nearly freezing to death) and actually located some ancient brick buildings and abandoned rail tracks at the 43rd Street entrance.

I also found this metal lamppost in a side alley, which to me is reminiscent of the Machine Age-metal posts used on the Manhattan Bridge from the 1930s into the 1960s. It has an attached General Electric M400 that likely burned out long ago.
