GOLDEN LADY, PORT MORRIS

by Kevin Walsh

NOT that I would know, but one comment on the Flickr page where I got this image of the Golden Lady strip club at Bruckner Boulevard and East 133rd in Port Morris says…

This use to be the spot to go to in the Bronx a few years back. Celebrities and all the famous strippers frequented here. It closed down a few years back and a few other stip clubs opened not too far from here. The great one being Sin City which has taken over since Golden Lady closed down.

I’m not sure if this place was open in the 1970s; if it was, Stevie Wonder may have heard of it:

As popular as Golden Lady was, it closed down in 2019 and the odd, triangle-shaped plot soon was the new location of The South Bronx Charter School for International Cultures and the Arts. It’s n odd spot for a school, as there are no nearby stoplights and here, East 133rd is a warehousing and manufacturing hub, with forklifts moving in and out of the buildings on East 133rd.

This is a section of Bruckner Boulevard I haven’t explored fully, so I may be edging toward the area in the next few months. Note that the school has a multicolored facade, also a trait shared by a nearby new Best Western motel, which looks like a Mondrian painting.

Through the school there may still echo the music accompanying Golden Lady’s mink coat (and nothing else) strip-offs.

Those of us of a certain age cannot read “Mondrian painting” and NOT think of the Partridge Family’s bus. No explanation that I am aware of was ever given as to why that paint scheme,

Dunno if Stevie Wonder ever heard of it, but he wouldn’t have, you know, benefitted from it.

Maybe the location for that school does make sense if it happens to be a charter school rather than a regular public school.

Sin City has been closed for years. Right now you can redeem your empty bottles and cans at this location.
