WALSH COURT, 1940-1980-2020

by Kevin Walsh

THERE’S only one street in NYC officially named Walsh (my name) in NYC, the one-block Walsh Court between East 3rd and 5th (East 4th does not intersect) along the LIRR Bay Ridge Branch south of Foster in Midwood. There are probably a number of subnamed streets in NYC named for one Walsh or another, such as my full namesake, Kevin J. Walsh Way, named for a local electrical contractor at Midland and North Railroad Avenue in Grant City, Staten Island. In Midwood, Walsh Court turns up on maps as early as 1920, and I have no idea who it’s named for.

I have always been fascinated by the house on the corner of East 3rd and Walsh Court. I first encountered it in the 1980s, when it looked like this. It still looked much the same as it did in the black and white 1940 photo, with its porch and multipaned windows still intact.

By 2020, though, things have pretty much been blanded down with aluminum siding, but with the old outlines still intact…

At the intersection of North Railroad Avenue and Midland Avenue in Staten Island, an honorary “Kevin J. Walsh Way” sign proudly stands. Let me know how to send in a photo.

I lived on Foster Ave just east of Seton Pl after I got married. A walk “around the block” took us on East 3rd-Walsh Court-East 5th and back. It was a nice working-class neighborhood!
