RED TIDE

9/10/11: Silt running from overflowed upstate streams, courtesy Tropical Storms Irene and Lee, has left the Hudson River with an unusual reddish color.

Cohoes Falls is located on the Mohawk River just before that river meets the Hudson. Normally its pretty quiet, especially at this time of the year when there is no melting snow pack. Take a look at this youtube video as an example of what happened with Irene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxuGxF8PN8Y&feature=related). You will get some idea where the silt came from.
