CATHEDRAL PREP, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

by Kevin Walsh

This is a photo of the Cathedral Prep, Brooklyn, basketball team in a late 1920s yearbook. The fellow on the right, John Crane, was the coach, and by the time I got to the school in the Super Seventies, he was still the coach.

I have a number of photos of the school (which looks like a medieval castle) in the old days, and a few from a 2005 visit, so I’m thinking of doing a more comprehensive page about the place.

It’s in Clinton Hill (but almost in Bed Stuy).

Happy New Year – & please continue the good work of FNY!

Hello, my father-in-law played basketball in the mid-50s for Cathedral Prep. We’re trying to track down any pictures or articles on it, but my husband thought that it was in the Bronx. Do you if there was another Cathedral prep in the city in the 50s?

I graduated from Cathedral Prep, Brooklyn in 1972. I played Varsity basketball for three seasons. Mr. Vinny Ciraulo was our coach and math teacher. Mr. Crane was still the physical education teacher! Mr. Crane was also Vince Lombardi’s coach. (I have the 1930 & 1932 Cathedral yearbooks which the Library was throwing out in 1971!) Vince Lombardi was both on Cathedral’s basketball and baseball teams and class president. Even back then he had a commanding, even frightening, appearance.

I am Jim Vackner class of 1978. Played for Vinny. What a great coach. We learned from him a teams is better than the individuals. We won in 1975, 1977 and should have in 1978. Mr. Crane was our PE teacher
