GE FORM 109, Springfield Gardens

by Kevin Walsh

A rare General Electric Form 109 lamp, quite unusual in NYC, sits on property currently being redeveloped on Springfield Boulevard and 136th Avenue. Never used extensively in NYC, these lamps were developed in the 1950s as one of the first using mercury and emitting a greenish-white light. It hums quite noticeably when warming up in the evening.

No idea how long this post will remain in this spot, but the Department of Transportation has placed a pair of new street signs on it, so perhaps it’ll have some staying power.
