In 2010 I snapped this photo on Leroy and Washington Streets of a vinyl and plastic sign for La Frieda Meats, a 4th generation butcher that has gained an enviable reputation for quality products, and in the age of celebrity chefs and restaurants on TV it’s all about connections: Mario Batali, Danny Meyer, Martha Stewart and Anthony Bourdain have all worked with Pat La Frieda Jr. on their various TV shows. La Frieda meat is used in such venues as Shake Shack and the Minetta Tavern.
In 1980, the La Frieda business occupied a building at Laroy and Washington but moved to a much larger facility in North Bergen, NJ, the same year this photo was taken. Street signs still proclaim the block as La Frieda Lane.
