AMERICAN WAX COMPANY, Long Island City

by Kevin Walsh

HERE’S a building at 39-30 Review Avenue that looks abandoned but is apparently very much alive, originally home to the American Wax Company. “Wax” can mean a lot of things, but it most often means polishing wax, semiliquid you spread on something to buff it so it shines. That’s the kind of wax the company apparently produced. According to its website the company was founded in 1929 and after 70 years in business merged with three other companies, Buckingham Wax Company, OSR Cleaning Specialties and Uncle Sam Chemical, and in 2003 also acquired Nationwide Chemical.

At this juncture American Wax didn’t distribute any polishing wax at all but sold cleaning products exclusively and so changed its name to American Cleaning Solutions. Most are heavy duty cleaning solutions not found in hardware stores or supermarkets. However, its 1929-era etched sign is still to be found on its worldwide HQ on Review Avenue.
