LOFTS FOR RENT, PENN STATION

by Kevin Walsh

HERE’S an ancient painted ad that has been there for many years and went unnoticed by me until was walking east on West 33rd Street and noticed it via an empty lot from a building teardown adjacent to St. Michael’s Church just west of 9th Avenue, near where the old Cheyenne Diner used to be. It’s way up there, near the top floor of a skyscraper, #440 9th Avenue at West 35th, a building that has Uncle Jack’s steakhouse on the ground floor. It reads…

LOFTS
STORES
FOR RENT
1000 to 20,000 SQ. FEET
Tel Penn 1478

According to the Indispensable One, Walter Grutchfield, another ad directly below it, now totally illegible, had this:

LEVINE BROS
WINDOW DISPLAY
SIGNS &
SHOW CARDS
PRINTED & LITHOGRAPHED
370 W. 35th ST.

Levine Bros. were located at 370 W. 35th St. from 1930 to 1934. So many ancient painted signs that have been there for multiple decades mark businesses that were in the location marked by the ad for only a couple of years!

As always, “comment…as you see fit.” I earn a small payment when you click on any ad on the site. Take a look at the new JOBS link in the red toolbar at the top of the page on the desktop version, as I also get a small payment when you view a job via that link.

Very nice find, Kevin.

Might as well document it because if certain individuals get their way all those buildings might be slated for demolition as part of the updated Penn District,
