PRIOR to 2019 or so, the south side of Delancey Street between Essex and Clinton Streets was undeveloped territory, with lots that were empty or given over to parking. That year, the new Essex Crossing development, a combined residential-retail high rise development, began construction; the retail was meant to supplant the now closed Essex Market complex, one of a series of 13 public markets around town commissioned at the end of the Depression in 1940. The original Essex Market went all the way back to 1818! The food court, the only reason I’d visit to be frank, closed in 2024.

Here’s the same view of Delancey and Suffolk Streets from the same spot seven years later, in 2024. The building on the left is called The Artisan, where the apartments are definitely not affordable. The young, fit and happy can do artificial rock climbing at the corner gym (the things people do occasionally mystify me). On the right is the equally pricey glass tower, One Essex Crossing.
The title card is Suffolk Street as it was just a few years ago, weedy and Belgian blocked in between lots. What a difference a few years make. The street is named for the British county (I believe the Long Island county is also named for its British counterpart.)
