I have been making an effort to hit various NYC neighborhoods I haven’t explored for a while. For some of these neighborhoods, 10 years is an eternity: but for some outlying areas like Prince’s Bay on the south shore of Staten Island, things haven’t changed much and I’m primarily interested in ascertaining if the status remained quo. Yes, it had been a good ten years since I last puttered around here in 2016. This time, in May 2026, I walked east on Amboy Road, a main drag that nonetheless has remained primarily residential.
On Amboy Road east of Bayview Avenue (which has its own collection of venerable homes), this is the landmarked Abraham Wood House, #5910 Amboy Road near Seguine Avenue, built in about 1840 by the oysterman and farmer. Note the eyelet windows on the second floor.
From the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 1973 report:
“This simple frame house, built in the Greek Revival style, was erected as a farmhouse shortly after Abraham J. Wood acquired the land from Joseph Sprague in September of 1840. It is located on a low, grassy knoll set back from Amboy Road, which is one of the oldest roads on the island, having been laid out in May 1709. By the mid-18th Century it had become one of the major routes between New York and Philadelphia for the stages forced to bypass the New Jersey Meadows.”
