CALLING HARLEM

A rusted sign reveals an alphanumeric telephone exchange on St. Nicholas Avenue and West 147th in Harlem. TR can stand for a number of things, but as this handy dandy list shows, here it was TRafalgar.

The physical phone exchange is still standing on the full block between 146 and 147th on Convent avenue. It is an anomaly that is popular with the youth of Harlem for stoopfront gathering because it has no associated homeowner unlike the rest of the sugar hill neighborhood.
